With Leader in Me and The 7 Habits of Happy Kids, goal setting is vital! This is how students really see all 7 Habits come together. Students apply the habits in a basic level and higher levels, and students use their goal setting and habits to become a leader! It is very exciting! For older children, a leadership binder is suggested. This is a place where they can keep their goals written, graph data and track their progress to attain their goal, an journal about their goal and plan and leadership skills. For kinder this was a challenge. After thinking, I decided to make a poster for each of my kids and post it on one wall in my room. This picture is only half my class. It is time consuming! HOWEVER IT WORKS! It is wonderful hearing students use language that is reflective of their goal. Hearing and seeing students self check to make certain they follow their plan to achieve their goals. And, when students get into trouble the conversation we have regarding their choice is more meaningful because we refer to their goal and plan. I included a close up of one student's poster. She set a goal for school and one for home. I really like how creative this student's rewards were. Rewards is a very important part, but it's important to stress that rewards don't have to be tangible- it can just be a warm fuzzy or something they enjoy. I think that's why I liked how genuine this student's responses were! Try it with your kids, it'll bring about a serious attitude change I promise!
